Being enterprising isn’t all about becoming the next Richard Branson. Enterprise is a cultural mindset where you, as an individual, develop skills that allow you to be creative, innovative and flexible in a rapidly changing economy.
First hand experience
You could learn how to start up your own company.
It is about stretching yourself to your limit and experiencing first hand what you are capable of. This will help you develop the leadership attributes needed to succeed in the future– whatever you choose to do.
Student Enterprise at the University of Southampton aims to encourage, foster and build capability in innovation and entrepreneurial thinking. Whether you want to get inspired, get involved or simply get some advice, Student Enterprise will provide you with the support you need.

Global Spin Outs
The University of Southampton has a global reputation for commercialising our research into successful business ventures.
Since 2000, the University has produced twelve successful spin-out companies, four of which have floated on the Alternative Investment Market (AiM) of the London Stock Exchange with a combined market capitalisation value of £180 million. They are the oil exploration company Offshore Hydrocarbon Mapping (OHM), the asthma research company, Synairgen, the fibre laser manufacturer, SPI Lasers (now Trumpf) and most recently Ilika, a materials discovery company.
In 2007, an influential report confirmed the University’s global status as one of the top entrepreneurial universities. The Library House report drew favourable comparisons between the Universities of Southampton, Stanford and Cambridge, placing Southampton in the top 3 worldwide for the quality of our spin-out companies.
