As one of the leading research universities in the UK, we are committed to giving you the best possible learning experience. We will provide you with the opportunities to develop the critical thinking and independent learning that will be essential to becoming a future leader and decision maker.
Virtual learning environments
As well as accessing study materials, you may use the virtual learning environment to interact with experts in your field and work on group projects.
You will be taught by academics working at the forefront of their fields and learn about world-leading research as it takes place, giving you the kind of education that will put you among the most sought-after graduates.
Depending on your chosen programme you could experience a wide range of innovative learning methods such as field trips, laboratory study, excavations, private and public sector placements, and group projects, all of which are supported by virtual learning environments.
You could also be using our world-class facilities such as the Southampton Flight Simulator or wind tunnels. You will be challenged intellectually and encouraged to develop your ability to work and learn independently. Through group project work you will gain the transferable skills – such as communication, teamwork and project management – to put your subject knowledge into practice and help you achieve your career aspirations.
Preparing you for your future
We are transforming the structure and flexibility of our educational programmes so that we can offer a unique Southampton educational experience.
One of our innovations is the opportunity to exercise choice and customise your learning. We have introduced interdisciplinary modules to many of our degree programmes, as well as opening up existing modules across more programmes. If you study for Single Honours in Humanities or Social Sciences, you will also be able to choose a Minor subject to go alongside your main degree.
Some of our new interdisciplinary modules include: Building the Human Body, Business Skills for Employability, Digital Humanities, Ethics in a Complex World, Global Health, Impact of Micro-organisms: Industry, Health and the Environment, Intercultural Communication in a Global World, Living with Environmental Change, Online Social Networks, Piracy, Security and Maritime Space - and many more.
