A WSA MA Fine Art student has been shortlisted for a prestigious art prize in Singapore, where she lives.  Nordiyana Omar, who completed her studies at WSA in 2013/14, has been shortlisted for The Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation (APB) Signature Art Prize, one of the richest regional art awards in the country.  The award, which began in 2008 and takes place every three years, has just raised the amount of its top prize by more than 30 per cent to $60,000.  Nordiyana's selected work including a complex video installation she created while studying at WSA, entitled Grandma and I (Weaving and Wake).

Nordiyana is one of six Singapore artists to be nominated by 24 countries and regions competing for the prize.  Competition is intense, with applicants including established internationally-acclaimed artists including China's Xu Zhen, Indonesia's FX Harsono and India's Shilpa Gupta. The short-list will be announced on Aug 11th and the 15 selected works will be exhibited at the Singapore Art Museum, a partner of the prize, from Nov 14th until next March. The winner will be named at an awards ceremony in January.

Discussing her entry for the competition, Nordiyana said, "I am delighted that the work I created during my study at WSA has been nominated for the APB Signature Art Prize. WSA has provided me with the environment and opportunity to strive towards becoming a better artist.  My learning became richer through attending the Talking Heads series, lectures at the Centre for Global Futures, frequent critique sessions with helpful peers and consultations with the dedicated staff of WSA, among many other programmes.  I am happy that during my period of study at WSA, I was able to develop my work towards an exhibition standard and encapsulate the ideas that I have been keeping with me for a long time, leading to the work to be short-listed for the prize."
