Call for applications

The Web Science Institute has been granted a £100,000 Research Collaboration Stimulus Fund for 2015/16.This is funded from the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) allocated to the University by HEFCE to stimulate interactions with business, government, industry and other users of University research.

The Research Collaboration Stimulus Fund will pump prime small research projects that fulfil the following criteria:

  • Involve collaboration between disciplines, and applications that are cross-Faculty will be strongly favoured.
  • Facilitate research collaborations and engagement with non-academic partners.
  • Lead to the development of full research grant or contracts proposals with non-academic partners. Projects arising will be externally funded either directly or the non-academic partner(s) will be leveraged through public funding sources, either national or international.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to Web Science.

Applications may be made from any Faculty at the University of Southampton.

The grants may support the costs of staff time, equipment (up to £3k) and consumables; individual grants are expected to be less than £15k, although applications for larger grants will be considered in exceptional circumstances. Proposals (i.e. with appropriate costs) must be approved by the Principal Investigator’s Faculty.

A case for support should be one A4 page long and include the title of the project, names of investigators, a short case for support, breakdown of requested resources, expected start date, and explanation of how collaboration with external stakeholders will be achieved. Applications should be 12pt font and 2cm page margins. Please submit applications electronically in PDF format to Susan Davies sdd1@soton.ac.uk by 5pm on Friday 7 August 2015.

Successful applicants will be required to:

  • Produce a one page mid-term report by 29 February 2016 (to include a review of the budget spent to date and a 3-page outline for a large scale grant proposal).
  • Produce a 3-page final report by 31 July 2016 to include brief outline of project, outcomes, collaboration with external stakeholders, impact review.
  • Produce a 3-page abstract proposal by 31 July 2016 for a large-scale grant application, to include PI/Co-Investigators, external collaborators, outline of proposed research, objectives, funding avenues and amount sought, timescales, impact.
  • Spend all allocated funds by 31 July 2016.

An awards panel comprising all of the Web Science Institute Directors will rank proposals and make final funding decisions accordingly. Grants will be announced within two weeks of the closing date. Funding will be available from 1 September 2015.
