Photos and lab results from March 23rd Masterclass

Southampton University School of Physics and Astronomy is hosting this half-day event, highlighting some of the latest developments in Particle Physics research, and enabling physics students in their sixth form (and their teachers) to experience the excitement of research in this fundamental field. It provides the opportunity to relate A-level physics to fundamental research, and provides valuable access to practical experience and enthusiastic practitioners.

Programme

The following activities have been planned for the Masterclass

  • "Light Fantastic" - a laser display and talk by Dr Nick Evans on Relativity and Quantum Mechanics
  • "The Particle World" a talk by Dr. Jonathan Flynn about the sub-atomic world
  • "Counting Quarks at LEP" - a computer lab session in which the students will study events from a major particle physics experiment to determine the number of quark colours.
  • "The Future of Particle Physics" - a talk by Prof. Steve King on the current frontier of the field from the higgs boson to supersymmetry to superstrings and beyond!
plus hands-on equipment from the Rutherford-Appleton laboratory and computer simulations of particle accelerators. The Masterclass will conclude with a "Particle Question Time" which gives you the chance to quiz our panel of `experts'.
