Ingleton Field Course
Summer Vacation, First Year
Sat. 17th JUNE to  Wed 28th JUNE 2000

This course is compulsory for all Master of Geology and Single Honours Geology students, Geology-with-Another Science Students and Marine Geosciences Students (even if taking First-Year referral and/or resit exams).

There will be a preliminary meeting to discuss the arrangements for this fieldtrip on Friday 24th March 2000, commencing at 1.30pm in the Main Teaching Lab (Lab G, SOC).  All those who will be going on this trip are expected to attend, and a register will be taken to ensure everyone has received the relevant information.

Please note that this trip is part of course unit GY210 and that the marks obtained will count towards your final degree.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES.

The main goal of this field excursion is to acquire the fundamental geological field skill of mapping. The course emphasizes the basic skills essential to good field mapping these include the ability to:-

1. Locate yourself in the field.

2. Make essential field observations and measurements.
2.1: use compass/clinometer to record dip and strike.
2.2: record observations  correctly on base map field slips and in correct location.
2.3: recognise main rock types: igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary - and their subdivisions.
2.4: recognise main geological structures: folds, faults, joints, unconformities.
2.5: recognise main fossil groups.
2.6: observe relationships between geology and landscape features.

3. Keep accurate field records.
3.1: keep map and notebooks neat, tidy and up-to-date.
3.2: make appropriate field sketches, incorporating scale and orientation.
3.3: draw cliff or quarry sections to scale.
3.4: construct a sediment log through a sedimentary sequence.
3.5:  tidy-up field slips (ink and colour) in evenings!

THE COURSE/TEACHING METHODS.

1. Preparatory lecture (including Safety Briefing, Background and Aims of Course, and an Outline of Assessment Procedures).

2. Field course
2.1: one day introduction to field area and mapping techniques.
2.2: seven days of mapping Ingleton area.
2.3: two one day trips to produce maps of contrasting geology.
2.4: evening seminars on the principles and problems of producing geological field maps.
