GY210 Ingleton Field Course: prior reading requirements A copy of 'Basic Geological Mapping' by J.W. Barnes (Open University Press) is essential. It will be assumed that you have read Chapters 1 & 2 prior to the start of the trip, and you will be tested on this. Please take steps to obtain a copy as soon as possible. We will be mapping ‘Formations' and you must know what constitutes a Formation. A copy of 'The Field Description of Sedimentary Rocks' by M. Tucker (Open University Press) will also prove extremely useful. It tells you the type of data that you should be recording in your field notebook. In particular, you should revise the criteria for establishing stratigraphic ‘way-up' in the field and the way of indicating this on the map. You will be required to pass a short assessment to indicate that you have completed the background reading at the same time as you complete your registration details upon arriving in Ingleton, on Saturday 17th June 2000. Both books are available in the SOC Library and for purchase at the University Bookshop (Waterstones). Please follow the links (left) for further information regarding the field course. |
