GY210 Ingleton Field Course: excursion to Sedgwick Geology Trail

The Sedgwick Geology Trail near Dent, follows the River Clough in Garsdale and crosses the Dent Fault.  This major fault separates the Silurian strata of the Howgill Fells (to the west) from the Carboniferous strata of the Askrigg Block (to the east).  The throw of the fault may be as much as 2.5km in places.  Adam Sedgwick, who was born nearby in Dent, was a founding father of modern geology and was the first person to discover and interpret this fault.

You will be mapping the exposures found along the length of the trail on the base map provided.  There are three formations to map, each consisting of a single lithology (limestone, shale and conglomerate).  You will be required to describe points of interest, with the aid of scaled and annotated field sketches.

Once you have completed the mapping exercise, it will be necessary to construct a geological cross section of the trail, extrapolating the structure both above and below ground level.
