A few bullets:

-         In 1990 he arranged for the name of the Physics department to be changed to Physics & Astronomy to reflect the growth of astronomy in the university

-         Created the university observatory on the roof which was opened by the VC in 1996

-         Initiated the Tenerife Field trip with the help of staff from the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias, now running for over 25 years

-         Put together the undergraduate With-Astronomy degree programme

-         Created the Harvard year-abroad programme for final year UG students

-         Created the Astronomy for Poets and Search for Life CIP courses which frequently attract 100+ non-physics students every year

-         Created Mayflower studentships to give PG students experience in teaching

-         Was HoD for 3 years (2005-2008) and during that time was a major player in SEPnet, winning 12M pounds from HEFCE which funded a significant expansion in the department through several new academic appointments

-         Admissions Tutor for 8 years, Senior Tutor for 4 years, head of astro group for 2 years

-         Supervised 25 PhD students to successful completion, several of which now have academic positions around the world.

-         Has spent over 220 nights at telescopes around the world

-         Published over 200 publications with over 5000 citation.

-         2005 won VCs Teaching award

-         2014 Won SEPnet Achievement award for Public Engagement

-         2017 won SUSU Academic Award for Best Pastoral Support in the faculty

-         2017 had asteroid named after him (4 miles in size, mostly black in colour)
