Mass Spectrometry

History

The Mass Spectrometry Group in the School of Chemistry at the University of Southampton was established in 1988 and has a research history including work in the early days of Fullerenes with the Sussex Group, introduction of the first open access MS system to academia, combichem, and applications in DNA research.

Current Activities

The Group has developed a strong research support function for clients both internal and external to the University. Clients include companies from the Pharmaceutical, Chemical and Oilfield Industry, SMEs, Custom Synthesis Houses, Government Agencies, Universities and many more. Projects undertaken have varied from simple compound analysis to major problem solving projects.
The current research projects include exact mass measurements using FT-ICRMS, metabolites identification and SFC-MS. For more information about the on-going research, please visit John Langley's Group website.

The Laboratory Today

The range of mass spectrometers has grown to the point where the group now has a wide range of state-of-the-art systems capable of dealing with all sample types and a wide array of client demands. Staff capability has grown with retention and experience.

Future Objectives

Plans are in place to extend the function of the Facility with respect to contract analysis as well as to continue to develop the MS suite to meet the research needs of the internal clients
