Dr Stuart E. Middleton

Stuart is an Associate Professor at the School of Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton.

Stuart's research interests are focussed on the natural language processing areas of information extraction and human-in-the-loop NLP. He has been a PI and CoI on various UKRI, EU H2020, Innovate UK, Home Office and DSTL projects. Many of these projects are cross-disciplinary in nature, featuring consortia with a mixture of academic and commercial partners experienced in a range of domains and disciplines.

Stuart graduated in electrical engineering from University of Southampton in 1992, and has since worked commercially for Lloyd's of London, RACAL and DERA before starting his PhD in 1999. His PhD from University of Southampton looked into recommender systems and ontologies, working under supervisors Prof Dave de Roure and Prof Sir Nigel Shadbolt, and was completed in Oct 2002. He then joined the University of Southampton as a research engineer before taking on a faculty position. Stuart has acquired experience in a wide range of domains working at the highest level, is a Turing Fellow, Senior Member of the ACM, Member of the ACL, Fellow of the HEA and PRINCE2 practitioner.
