Outstanding classical, jazz, world music and folk

Turner Sims is part of the University of Southampton and one of the UK’s leading live music venues.

The location of the concert hall in the middle of Highfield campus allows staff and students to relax with inspiring music as part of their daily routine, accessing world-class musicians through Turner Sims’ free ticket schemes and discounted student rates. 

You can discover everything from New York jazz to virtuoso classical musicians, from traditional folk bands to Malian rock guitarists, as well as collaborations with University departments on regular events.

Music department

The University’s Department of Music stage an array of public events at Turner SimsThe Brook and other venues across the city. These include lunchtime concerts and special performance projects that showcase student performers and professional artists, the annual, student-organised Share the Sound Festival, Hartley Researcher Residencies and a VIP Guest series, which offers a chance to hear staff in conversation with leading musicians. Details of their events are regularly updated on their website and you can also request to receive their regular events e-bulletin by emailing musicbox@soton.ac.uk.

Student and community music groups

There are over twenty student-led music societies, accessible to all University students through the Students’ Union, varying from music theatre groups presenting frequent productions to a full-sized symphony orchestra. The University’s Community Choir, directed by Harvey Brough, is open to students, staff and members of the public and welcomes all abilities.

Music in the city

Southampton and Winchester are home to a number of celebrated live music venues such as The Brook, The Railway Inn, The Joiners and O2 Guildhall Southampton. There are plenty of other exciting musical happenings around the city such as PLAYLIST, which features high quality music in unusual spaces, and performances staged by SÓN, Southampton’s professional orchestra.
