IELTS/EAP Teaching

Preparing students for international study is increasingly becoming a key element of English Language teaching at higher levels of education. Whether it is supporting students in maximising their potential to achieve good scores in the IELTS exam or helping students to gain the skills they will need to for international study through the medium of English teachers are increasingly in need of professional development in order to address these specific needs. Our courses are based on our considerable expertise in delivering Academic English training for students and also in working with the IELTS exam.

An example of one of our recent courses is given below:

Advanced IELTS Teaching (China)

This course is run in partnership with Beijing Waiyan Online Digital Technology Co., Ltd. It is aimed at teachers of English who are preparing their students to take the IELTS test. The course is focused mainly on the 4 skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and questions relating to IELTS teaching in the local context. The course can be offered as an in-person residential course in Southampton UK or online. The in-person course takes place over 2-3 weeks and covers each skill in depth with additional sessions for participants to explore the wider implications of the test for students who plan to undertake a period of study abroad. The online course, which is usually much shorter (5 days) includes a combination of flipped (asynchronous) tasks as preparation for live (synchronous) workshops in which participants will be introduced to practical teaching ideas/strategies which they can incorporate into their own lessons.

The course is delivered by experts from the University of Southampton who have extensive experience of supporting students to pass the IELTS exam, training teachers to work with the exam and advising colleagues and policy makers about IELTS.

EAP Toolkit

The EAP (English for Academic Purposes) Toolkit is a comprehensive set of interactive learning resources for developing the language and study skills of international students and students whose first language is not English, for higher or further education. It comprises over 100 items (80+ hours of study) and can be used by students for independent study or by teachers in the classroom. It is available for licence by institutions and can be delivered over the web to students at a particular institution or through a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) such as Blackboard or Moodle. As a teacher these resources can be used as part of an online or blended EAP course or simply offered to students for self-study.
