Dr Hugo Nolan is a Research Fellow in the Advanced Composite Materials Facility in Chemistry, University of Southampton.

Dr Nolan received his PhD in Chemistry from Trinity College Dublin in 2015, having previously completed his Bachelor's degree in Physics and Chemistry of Advanced Materials, also in Trinity. During his PhD research, he worked on thin film deposition techniques and electrochemical applications. After this he worked on a short project on photoelectrochemical water treatment in the School of Chemical Sciences in Dublin City University. Following this, Hugo joined the Advanced Composites Research Group in Queen's University Belfast, in the School of Mechanical Aerospace Engineering. This position involved synthesis of nanoparticle-hydrogel composites for biomedical applications using atmospheric Microplasma techniques.

Hugo joined the Advanced Materials Facility in 2018, where his work focuses on the development of mixed valence transition metal oxides for alkaline fuel cell and electrolyser applications.

Research interests

-Thin film deposition and characterisation.

-High-throughput UHV-PVD and electrochemical techniques.

-Oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution electrocatalysis using perovskite and spinel materials.
