Dr John Kavanagh BSc (Hons) PhD
Research Fellow
Dr John Kavanagh is a Research Fellow in the Advanced Composite Materials Facility in the Chemistry department, University of Southampton.
John graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Medical Physics and a PhD in Thin Film Physics from the Thin Film Centre at the University of the West of Scotland in 2012. Subsequently, he joined the Research Centre in Surface Engineering at the University of Sheffield as a post-doctoral research associate. At Sheffield, he was involved in industrial collaborations with companies such as Rolls-Royce, Airbus UK, Alstom and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). In 2016, he joined the Advanced Composite Materials Facility at the University of Southampton as a Research Fellow and his research is based on the high-throughput physical vapour deposition (HT-PVD) of chalcogenide thin films.
John’s research has focuses on the deposition and characterisation of materials and developing novel materials through PVD processes. This also includes development of optical filters and solar thermal absorbers. He also has extensive experience in developing protective, hard coatings which can be used to extend the lifetime of engineering components
