The University of Southampton is opening enrolment for student engineers at its new Malaysia Campus in South Johor, following confirmation of its academic accreditation by the Malaysian education authorities.

The University of Southampton Malaysia Campus in EduCity@Iskandar is Southampton's first overseas campus. Undergraduates are now able to enrol for places on the Master of Mechanical Engineering undergraduate programme which starts at the campus in October 2012.

The University of Southampton's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Don Nutbeam, and developers Iskandar Investment Berhad formally signed the agreement to open the University of Southampton Malaysia Campus last January, witnessed by YB Dato' Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Minister of Higher Education in Malaysia, and Mr Simon Featherstone, British High Commissioner to Malaysia.

Professor Nutbeam, says: "It is a tribute to the hard work of the project team that we have achieved our educational accreditation in Malaysia so swiftly. It is only ten months since we signed the formal agreement to open our Malaysia Campus. The University is excited to be associated with the innovative EduCity development that brings together a host of world-leading educational institutions in a unique research and learning environment.

"As an international university with globally renowned reputation in engineering and research, our expertise will offer students a world-class education, helping to meet Malaysia's demand for exceptional engineering graduates."

Professor John McBride, Chief Executive Officer of University of Southampton Malaysia Campus, comments: "Southampton's mechanical engineering courses are consistently rated very highly in university league tables. I am delighted that we will now be able to deliver our courses in Malaysia as well.

"What makes our courses particularly attractive is the fact that students will be able to study in English in Malaysia for the first two years of the programme, and study at Southampton's UK campus for the last two years. This offers students a truly international experience."

Datuk Syed Mohamed Syed Ibrahim, President/CEO of Iskandar Investment Berhad, says: "The University of Southampton Malaysia Campus in EduCity@Iskandar will boost the region's education offering and raise overall education standards in Malaysia. It will also address a shortage of engineers in Malaysia and nurture the next generation of industry leaders."
