Calculating the cost of aircraft development wins a prize for Sarah
University of Southampton postgraduate student Sarah Haswell has won a prize for forecasting the developmental cost of aircraft for the UK’s Defence, Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl). Her dissertation on the results of her summer placement was judged one of the best of the year by academics.
Sarah signed up for the MSc programme in Operational Research after graduating with an undergraduate degree in Computational Mathematics from the University of Reading.
“It was a very interesting project as there are so many factors to consider. I found the cost of development in aviation could vary tremendously. It was good to put my theoretical tools learned at university into practice,” she says. Sarah has now secured a job with Dstl and is continuing with the developmental work.
Her supervisor during the summer placement, Ed Rochead, is now her team leader. “We were very impressed with Sarah’s drive and enthusiasm during the project. She carried out a lot of research before joining us, then she was tenacious in finding the people she needed to talk to over the holiday period,” he adds. “We employed Sarah through our usual recruitment process, of course, but she was clearly the best candidate on the day.”
Sarah is now based at Dstl’s Portsdown West site in Fareham, Hampshire.
