Head of Group: Professor Jim Scanlan The CED Group carries out multidisciplinary research using a range of analytical, computational and experimental techniques. Our strength lies in this sophisticated mix of engineering methods, coupled with industrial applications.

We aim to be a centre of excellence for multidisciplinary engineering simulation and design which combines a range of analytical, computational and experimental techniques. Our strength lies in this sophisticated mix of engineering methods, coupled with industrial applications: a particular focus for our activities over the next few years will be the development of grid-based, problem-solving services for use by academia and industry.

Our primary research interests fall into three broad themed areas:

  • design search and optimisation
  • applied computational modelling
  • computational methods

These span cost modelling, design optimisation, solid material modelling, computational fluid dynamics, computational electromagnetics, repetitive structures, contact mechanics, structural dynamics and computational methods.

We host the Southampton Regional e-Science Centre, the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre for Computational Engineering and the Microsoft Institute for High Performance Computing. Our recently refurbished and dedicated building is equipped with numerous workstations, video conferencing facilities and high-speed parallel and clustered processor systems. Activities include the use of computational methods for studying design and related problems in fluids, structures, control systems and biomechanics, evolutionary optimisation, construction of advanced cost-prediction systems, optimisation of metamodelled, approximate or noisy systems and analysis of robustness.
