Centre for Risk Research

Risk analysis, big data analytics and cyber risk management

Our Centre for Risk Research (CRR) is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading centres of risk research, with a strong record of delivering projects with high impact for commercial partners. Our distinctive, inter-disciplinary approach to the analysis and management of risk, is enabled by the wide spread of disciplines represented in the Centre, from statistics, through management science, risk management, finance, reputation management, psychology, computer science and project management to information systems.

Our expertise

We have an international reputation for:

  • Risk analysis work associated with the analysis of Big data
  • Development of state-of-the art dashboards presenting cognitively-intuitive, real-time risk information that optimises risk management decisions
  • Analysis of large complex databases to predict behaviour in highly uncertain environments
  • Development of innovative, automated, intelligent, statistically verified data quality checking and repair procedures
  • Creation of new mathematical/statistical procedures for extracting maximum value from information contained in Big data
  • Risk analysis of vessels working in uncertain environments. For example, we are currently working with 19 European partners on the € 8M Horizon 2020 project to develop a new deep underwater glider capable of conducting observations at depths up to 5000 metres

Cyber risk

We also host one of UK's first MSc programmes in Cyber Security Risk Management, and have recently been awarded (in conjunction with University's Academic Centre of Excellence of Cyber-Security and IBM) a large grant by the High Education Academy to explore, from a learning and practical perspective, how to maximise the benefits from collaboration between external industrial cyber security experts and their own multidisciplinary staff and university students. We are also working on a project funded by GCHQ, the aim being to establish good practice for Big data anonymization, specially focused on aggregated data from multiple sources and reducing the risk of unintended disclosure. CRR staff are also currently providing.
