Hi, I'm Sebastian Chikuta and I studied MSc Gerontology (Distance Learning) within Social Sciences: Ageing/Gerontology at the University of Southampton.

I think generally this course is very wonderful. One thing I loved so much was the content of the materials and you take on a number of subjects that really look at all of the aspects of ageing.

Q: Why did you choose to undertake your studies at the University of Southampton?

When I think about my country the support for older people is really limited and it was one of the factors that motivated me to do this course.

Q: What did you enjoy about the course?

I think generally this course is very wonderful. First and foremost I believe the way the university delivers the course is one of the aspects that is motivating because they have recorded materials which are sent on to the Blackboard of the university and in this wold as long as you have access to internet as a student you have access to these materials, listen to these lectures and see the way they are presented they are really fantastic handouts. One thing I loved so much was the content of the materials and you take on a number of subjects that really look at all of the aspects of ageing. I think one of my greatest interests was the aspect of research. The research component covered most quantitative and qualitative research which is also my area of interest.

Q: What have you achieved as a result of studying at the University of Southampton?

The skills I have actually obtained out of this course are conducting very good research, issues of negotiation and communication skills. This course gives you the opportunity to do presentations which you record yourself and then you communicate and can send these to the University. Writing skills are also other skills I have gained and I really do hope that these are very useful for in my work back home in terms of negotiating and lobbying for the welfare of the older people to the government and high decision making structures.
