The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship is invaluable to me. The scholarship has enabled me to learn a lot about the British and other foreign cultures. I have been able to network; which is invaluable! Most importantly, it has given me the opportunity to study my dream course, Gerontology at Southampton. The University of Southampton is one of the top 5 institutions for ageing studies in the UK.

Q: Tell us about your experience of being a student in Southampton

My experience of being a student in the University of Southampton has been very amazing. The University and city is extremely international-student-friendly! When I first commenced my program in October 2017, I thought that I'd never be able to adapt to the entire system (both academic and social). But I received an overwhelming support from my lecturers and the Student life team, which helped me settle in well and fast.

Learning has been entirely very interesting for me in Southampton. All lectures in the lecture rooms are recorded and uploaded on blackboard. So, if I don't understand any lecture in the class, I could always listen to that lecture again any time and any day of my choice.  The reading materials for my various modules are up to date, always available and easily accessible. My lecturers are supportive and that makes learning much easier for me.

There are also lots of international students like myself, studying here; that motivates me so much. The Students Union has many clubs, societies and activities that help to make life as a student in Southampton, enjoyable.

Q: What does the Scholarship mean to you?

The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship is invaluable to me.

Q: What has the Scholarship enabled you to do?

The scholarship has enabled me to learn a lot about the British and other foreign cultures.  I have been able to network very much; which is inevitable! Most importantly, it has afforded me the opportunity to study my dream course (Gerontology) in one of the top 5 institutions for ageing studies in the UK.  This program in the University of Southampton takes an interdisciplinary approach and as a result, I have been able to acquire many transferable skills (beyond the mere knowledge of old age) that would be of immense benefit to my home country at the end of my studies.

Anyone from any discipline could study gerontology. There is so much to gain from it. I've got course mates from various disciplines and countries. Studying this course in Southampton is worthwhile!
