Epidemiology for Clinicians Course Event

 A short introductory course in basic epidemiological methods is planned for 9^th - 11^th January 2013.   The topics to be covered in the course are given in the table below and the aim is to provide a broad overview of the main epidemiological principles and methods as well as to give an insight into the practical issues involved in conducting research. 

The course is open to clinicians working in any discipline.  It would also be appropriate for those working in a clinical area without clinical qualifications but an interest in research.   The examples used in the course will be from a wide range of disciplines.

The format of the course will be introductory lectures on each main topic followed by a practical session where participants will work through the issues raised by considering real examples of epidemiological studies.  Lectures and practicals will be of varying lengths depending on the material to be covered in each.   Each evening a general epidemiological lecture is presented to give an overview of a special topic.

The course will be run at Chilworth Manor in Southampton within easy access of the M3 motorway and the railway station.

Why epidemiology?	Introduction to epidemiology & examples of its practical application in the clinical setting
Measures of disease and risk	Types of disease and case definition, incidence, mortality, prevalence, attributable risk, relative risk, odds ratio, population attributable risk, attributable proportion
Interpreting epidemiological findings	Bias, measurement error, confounding & effect modification
Cohort studies & randomised controlled trials	Design and conduct of cohort studies and RCTs
Case-control and cross-sectional studies	Design and conduct of case-control studies
Getting started in research	Grant applications, ethical approval & research governance
Introduction to statistical analysis	Populations and samples, hypothesis testing, estimation with confidence intervals, power.  Taught through practical demonstration of findings rather than theory
Genetic epidemiology	Principles and pitfalls, candidate genes to genome wide scans

 

The course starts with lunch on Wednesday January 9^th and finishes after lunch on Friday January 11^th.   The full residential fee is £200.   This covers all tuition and full board including lunches on all three days and the course dinner that will be held on the Thursday evening at a local restaurant. Dinner on the Wednesday evening will be provided in Chilworth Manor.  The fee for non-residents is £100, which, in addition to the tuition, includes lunch on all three days and the course dinner on the Thursday evening.   Non-resident course participants who wish to join the resident participants for dinner on the Wednesday evening in Chilworth can do so for an additional charge of £29.95.
