Non medical prescribing

The aim of this programme is to prepare practitioners to safely exercise prescriptive authority as an Independent and/or Supplementary Prescriber.  Successful completion of this programme will enable practitioners to demonstrate achievement of the knowledge, skills, standards and competencies required to underpin prescribing practice (Department of Health 2006, Nursing and Midwifery Council 2006).

The programme is suitable for experienced healthcare practitioners who are able to study at level 6 or above, and are working in areas where they will be able to prescribe upon completion of the course. Students must be qualified for at least 3 years and have worked in the area where they will be prescribing for at least 1 year immediately preceding application to the programme

 

The programme consists of 2 separate modules, which run over 6 months:

The programme can be studied at level 6 or level 7. The pharmacology module can be taken as a stand alone module, should the student not require a prescribing qualification.
