The NMC Standards for Pre-Registration Education (2010) determine the types of practice learning experience that are required to register as a nurse. The Local Education and Training Board (LETB) and practice providers make a range of practice placements available which allow these requirements to be achieved. The University, LETB and practice providers work together to ensure that students are offered an equitable range of practice learning experiences which meet all the requirements without impacting adversely on service delivery. This is a complex fluid activity which takes into account:

Student placements are planned in advance to ensure that appropriate placements are available for each student to be able to complete their programme of study. The following formula is used for planning purposes:

It is the role of the Practice Learning Team to ensure that placements are planned and managed to reflect the changing landscape. A large number of inter-related systems are in operation to manage this process which may only become apparent to you if a change is required to the original planning.
