Incidents in Practice

Academic Lead for Student Support, Incidents in Practice

The Faculty has a Lead whose role it is to provide specialist advice, support and guidance to staff and students on medico legal issues that may arise whilst on practice placements. The Lead co-ordinates a team of colleagues who assist students to respond to, and manage incidents arising in practice settings. This encompasses situations where students wish to raise concerns relating to quality of care, or where they have been involved directly or indirectly in an adverse event. Support for students takes the form of assisting them in the construction of robust and detailed witness statements, preparing them for and attending related investigations or hearings, and providing opportunities to critically analyse and deconstruct events for personal learning and development. The lead liaises with placement staff, investigating officers and Learning Environment Leads in the management of these issues.

Safeguarding Officer (Adult and Child)

The Faculty has a nominated Safeguarding Officer who provides leadership and support around safeguarding activities in the Faculty and related practice learning settings. In partnership with practice providers, the Officer leads on the formation of process and policy, risk assessment and co-ordination of a response when there is a safeguarding concern.

Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) who place students with vulnerable individuals are required to adhere to the safeguarding requirements.  Academics contributing to health profession programmes are often registrants with associated responsibilities to protect vulnerable individuals as outlined in their Codes of Conduct. The Faculty seeks to do more than react to expressed concerns, and to be more proactive in the protection of vulnerable individuals from abuse. Students on placement need support to raise concerns in order to actively seek to protect vulnerable people.
