Led by Dr Lisa Roberts.
Communication is one of the most important aspects of practice that health professionals master.
Working with physiotherapists and people with back pain, we are developing and evaluating workshops and online materials, designed to enhance clinicians' communication skills to improve patient experience and outcome. Our health communication research creates the potential to change policy and improve cost-effectiveness.
After a systematic review of current resources to enhance physiotherapy communication skills we plan to conduct a multi-centre randomised controlled trial to address the question 'Can an educational intervention increase patient involvement in clinical decision-making processes and improve perceptions of empathy, enablement, communication, satisfaction, functional outcome, and number of face-to-face contacts?
Through close collaboration with colleagues from medicine, statistics; social science; education; and physiotherapy in Aberdeen and Teesside Universities, we will develop an electronic teaching resource for clinicians to enhance communication skills.
Dr Lisa Roberts, Senior Clinical Lecturer and consultant physiotherapist, has been awarded a six-year clinical academic fellowship to lead research into communication and decision-making during clinical consultations.
Lisa's CSP Fellowship was for her ‘significant contribution to the profession as a leader, clinician, researcher and educator'.
