A pioneering and provocative book by Jussi Parikka, Professor in Technological Culture & Aesthetics at the Winchester School of Art, has been chosen as ‘an Outstanding Academic Title for 2015’.

The accolade from Choice magazine for Jussi’s ‘A Geology of Media’ places the book amongst a prestigious list of ‘the most significant print and electronic works reviewed during the previous calendar year’.

The list also reflects ‘the best in scholarly titles and extraordinary attention from the academic library community.

Geology of Media_ParikkaChoice is the leading academic library publication. In their own review of ‘A Geology of Media’, the magazine said,

'This book is likely to become a part of the canon of media studies.'

Professor Parikka is interested in the materiality of media culture, the archaeologies of science, technology and art and questions of cultural theory.

In demonstrating how the environment provokes media culture, Professor Parikka argues that to adequately understand contemporary media culture we must set out from material realities that precede media themselves including closer investigation of Earth’s history, geological formations, minerals, and energy.
