AMT talk in the Visible Evidence Conference in Buenos Aires
Dr. Mihaela Brebenel is speaking at the 24th Visible Evidence conference held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her work deals with the study of moving image technologies, the aesthetics and politics of artistic practices with documents and monuments. Brebenel’s contribution is titled “Historiographies of the Present: the Question of Futurity in South-Eastern European Moving Image Art” and focuses on a selection of moving image works, which open up issues of structural violence in relation to space, architecture, and gender in the current political and economic context of South-East Europe.
This contribution is informed by Brebenel’s curatorial practices and is part of a larger project, which deals with digital images and screen technologies in the context of documentation and their use in artistic practice. Brebenel is particularly interested in feminist, queer, intersectional and collaborative practices and the use of collections and archives to reflect on recent history and in the role of historiography and the imaginary around futurity that these practices open up.
The conference moves around cities around the world, having been first held in 1993 in Durham, at Duke University. This year, considering the relationship between Latin American documentary film in Third Cinema and various historical revolutionary movements, Buenos Aires is chosen as a host. This selection also functions in the context of the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution and 50 years since Che Guevara was assassinated in Bolivia. This revolutionary historical and political context and recent history of Latin America and of Argentina in particular is interesting in the context of Dr. Brebenel’s research.
