Two new studies dealing with photography and visual culture by AMT affiliated scholars have just been published.

Dr Jane Birkin’s Archive, Photography and the Language of Administration and professor Jussi Parikka’s co-edited Photography Off the Scale both offer new ways of dealing with images beyond their representational content and relating photography to media theoretical questions of classification, ordering, labelling across a vast spread of practices. Shannon Mattern describes Birkin’s book as follows: "Archive, Photography and the Language of Administration offers a series of provocative snapshots that demonstrate how the seemingly clerical work of classifying images—through their formal arrangement, their archival description or their adornment with technical metadata—is an inherently productive and creative means of translating between image and text and code."

In Photography Off the Scale, Parikka’s chapter focuses on questions of alternative practices of light such as LIDAR technologies. In addition, the book has chapters ranging from online feminist visual practices to repurposing of slide libraries, planetary diagrams to images and AI.
