Dr Zhonglun Cai is Research Fellow within the Airbus Noise Technology Centre at the University of Southampton.

Dr Cai graduated in Jinan University in China with a first class BEng degree in Mechanical Engineering and Automation in 2005 and was awarded a PhD degree in 2009 in Electric and Electronic Engineering at School of Electronic and Computer Science at University of Southampton. The subject of his PhD was the practical implementation and algorithm development of iterative learning control (ILC), which included development of some advanced ILC algorithms and the practical implementation and experimental validation of the control theory on different mechanical rigs. In 2009, Dr Cai began his post-doctoral research in an EPSRC funded project in which advanced ILC was applied into a 3D stroke rehabilitation using functional electrical stimulation (FES), where ILC was applied to give stroke patient assistance in tracking a training trajectory with the aim to regain some muscle function. In 2011 Dr Cai began another post-doc research in the ANTC in an European Commission FP7 project (Clean Sky) where he applied ILC algorithms for the first time in active flow control and aerodynamic area. This work potentially enables lower fuel consumption and noise reduction, and ultimately has a greater environmental impact. Dr Cai also involved in the design and development of the controller and multiple mechanical or electrical components in the PlasmAero project which aims to use DBD plasma actuator to control the noise and flow on a number of airfoils.

Dr Cai has attended and contributed to conferences all over the world. In 2012, one of the conference papers was awarded the best paper prize in the UKACC. He has been appointed to review a number of papers in several top control engineering journals and conferences. He was selected to chair the ILC session in the American Control Conference (ACC) 2013. He also has connection with publication press Wiley to have future section in a book about ILC for students, researchers and professional engineers. He is a member of AIAA and IEEE.
