Event details

We will be holding a one-day cultural event on Saturday 07 March 2015 consisting of a series of short talks led by experts from within Archaeology at Southampton. This thought-provoking and inspiring conference will offer you the opportunity to learn and engage in discussion about prehistoric art.

From the earliest times humans made visually spectacular things. This study day will explore prehistoric ‘art’ from the early creation of figurines in the Ice Age (Upper Palaeolithic) to the decoration of metalwork and other utensils in the Iron Age. You will be introduced to some of the conceptual issues involved in the study of prehistoric art. For example how do we define ‘art’, and how do we know that prehistoric people made ‘art’? You will learn about the different arts of prehistoric Europe and will learn about their context and significance to prehistoric peoples. The study day provides an overview of current techniques and approaches to the study of prehistoric art from a group of scholars at the cutting edge of research.
