The stunning sites and landscapes of Avebury, Stonehenge and Old Sarum in Wiltshire mark some of the most nationally important archaeological landscapes in Britain, and the focus of research over the course of the 20th century. These landscapes cover ritual complexes, settlements and strongholds spanning from the Neolithic to the medieval period, and while the sites are well-known archaeologists are discovering new and exciting insights into how they functioned and the people who built them. This study day will look at the importance of these different sites, their landscape context, and how they changed through different periods, from the later prehistoric complexes of Avebury and Stonehenge, to the Iron Age. Romano-British and medieval monuments of Old Sarum and Salisbury. It will look at past archaeological research and perceptions of the monuments, and will present the results of new research, including archaeological fieldwork at Old Sarum and its environs.
