Claude Joseph Goldsmid-Montefiore

Claude Joseph Goldsmid-Montefiore (1858-1938) was the son of Nathaniel Montefiore and Emma Goldsmid. He assumed the additional surname of Goldsmid by letters patent. Goldsmid- Montefiore was educated privately and at Balliol College, Oxford, where he obtained a first class degree. He was Hibbert Lecturer in 1892 and was awarded the British Academy Medal for Biblical Studies in 1930. From 1892 to 1921 Goldsmid-Montefiore was President of the Anglo-Jewish Association. He was President of the Liberal Jewish Synagogue and Acting President of University College, Southampton, 1910-13 and then President, 1913-34. About the collection

A volume of manuscript notes, chiefly on Aristotle's politics; an address to Goldsmid-Montefiore, written on vellum and signed by members of the senate of University College, Southampton, 1913; a letter from D.D.Balfour, 1885; and a typescript of `Some old fashioned opinions and reflections about the Jews: a die- hard's confession', 1935.
