MS 236 Letters from Moriz, Count Esterhazy, to W.Cowper

Count Esterhazy

Count Esterhazy was an attache at the Austrian legation in Paris in 1836-8 and subsequently served as the Austrian representative at Rome, 1848-56, and as minister without portfolio in the Austrian governments of Schmerling and Belcredi, 1860-6. He was a confidant of the Emperor Franz Joseph.

William Cowper

William Cowper was private secretary to his uncle, Lord Melbourne, the British Prime Minister, from 1835 onwards.

About the collection

Twelve letters from Moriz, Count Esterhazy (1807-90), to William Cowper, later Cowper Temple, first Baron Mount Temple (1811-88), from 1832 and 1836-8, along with one further letter to Cowper probably from Maria, wife of Anton Paul, Prince Esterhazy, the Austrian ambassador in London.

The letters are written from Naples (1832) and Paris (1836-8), London and Liverpool (1837).

Papers relating to William Cowper's later official and political career are in MS 62.
