Papers of Manuel Godoy Alvarez de Faria, Duque del Alcudia, Principe del Paz, Generalissimo of the Spanish army, including files of his correspondence with Pedro Cevallos, the Spanish First Secretary of State, and with the Captain General of the Balearics (Juan Miguel de Vives) and subaltern governors, and with other officials in Bilbao, Malaga, Alicante, Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca, Valencia and Granada, Jan to Jun 1805.
The papers deal principally with reprisals against and the embargo of British property; naval preparations in Mallorca for the war against Great Britain; the treatment and exchange of British prisoners; with the Captain General of Catalonia about the conduct of Felix Gilbert, the [?]Prussian vice-consul in Barcelona; and about a Spanish translation of Thomas Paine's writings as Decadencia y ruina del sistema de rentas de Inglaterra. Included are incoming correspondence and enclosures, annotated by Godoy and his secretary, with drafts or copies of Godoy's replies.
