British Friends of Art Museums of Israel
The British Friends of Art Museums of Israel assists and supports art museums in Israel, specifically the Israel Museum, Jerusalem and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, as well as a number of smaller museums and public galleries. The BFAMI works to make the collections housed by these museums and galleries accessible through educational programmes, exhibitions, publications and encouraging donors to add to these collections.
The first meeting of the ‘Friends’ took place at the House of Commons on 18 November 1947: at this an executive committee, called the Friends of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, was elected with Dr. B.Stross M.P. in the chair.
In 1965 the Friends of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art were approached by the newly founded Israel Museum in Jerusalem for assistance in raising funds for the acquisition of works for their museum. It was agreed that the Friends would henceforth be known as the British Friends of the Art Museums of Israel. They became a registered charity in 1967.
