Dr Denis O'Shaughnessy

Denis O’Shaughnessy was educated in the UK and gained his first degree in Physiology & Biochemistry from London University and his Ph.D. in Physiology from the Royal Postgraduate Medical School. Denis joined the pharmaceutical industry in 1984 with American Cyanmid’s European Regional office in London and then took on positions of increasing responsibility with Sandoz (Novartis), Xoma and then as Head of Clinical Development at Celltech Limited in the UK. His entry into the ophthalmology arena came when working as a Clinical Leader for Hoffmann La Roche’s oncology group in Strasbourg, France in 1992. In that position he was responsible for initiating the first ever clinical research program for a pharmaceutical agent in retinal disease - alpha interferon for the treatment of wet AMD. Denis was a founding member of Eyetech Pharmaceuticals in 2000 and was responsible for overseeing the successful clinical development program for Macugen®, which was achieved in just under four years from inception to approval. More recently he oversaw the clinical development program for Oraya’s stereotactic radiotherapy device and successful study outcome in wet AMD for their CE marked device. Denis is currently acting as the Senior V.P. of Clinical Development in a consulting capacity for Xcovery Vision in West Palm Beach, Florida.
