Research interests

My research involves statistical genetics and bioinformatics approaches to understanding the human genome and the changes which can lead to disease. Research areas include:

  • Studies which aim to determine genes underlying ophthalmic traits such as Age-related Macular Degeneration, Primary Open Angle Glaucoma and Nystagmus. This involves next generation sequencing and genetic association studies and (with Andrew Lotery, Jay Self & Sarah Ennis, Faculty of Medicine).
  • Analysis of tumour samples to determine somatic variants from exome and targeted gene sequencing approaches in cancer patients (with Jon Strefford, Faculty of Medicine).
  • The determination and characterisation of linkage disequilibrium patterns and homozygous regions in disease and population studies.
  • The development of in-house tools and software pipelines to enable streamlined bioinformatic analyses of next generation sequencing data.
  • Identifying genes causing Mendelian diseases and detection of susceptibility genes involved in familial cancers using exome sequencing (with colleagues at Wessex Clinical Genetics Service).
  • Analysis of genomic and transcriptomic data investigating domestciation of crop species (with Mark Chapman, BioSci)
