Research interests

Asthma is a complex disease, with heterogeneous molecular and clinical characteristics. Scientists from universities, research institutes, the pharmaceutical industry and small companies across Europe came together to better understand asthma and improve treatment outcomes in U-BIOPRED (Unbiased biomarkers for the prediction of respiratory disease outcomes, a European innovative medicines initiative (imi)). U-BIOPRED participants’ proteomes were measured using data independent HDMSE and we identified asthma endotypes by topological data analysis (TDA) of the proteomic landscape of asthma.

New mathematical techniques are being applied to develop Network Medicine tools to integrate and interrogate large data sets of ‘omic technologies, and clinical variables. The ‘healthy’ state results from the interactions of thousands of biological molecules in a cell, tissue, organ or body. These molecules are DNA, RNA, protein and metabolites and are nodes in networks of cell behaviour, connected by interaction edges. Changes in phenotype can result from a single change in a single node, or many changes in nodes or edges. We are working towards better understanding of complex disease by looking at biological systems.
