Research interests

My research interests lie in understanding the structure and function of proteins. In particular those involved in clathrin mediated endocytosis, one of the fundamental pathways for macromolecules to enter cells.

The pathway contributes to diverse processes from cholesterol metabolism to synaptic vesicle recycling and can be hijacked by pathogenic toxins or viruses to gain entry to cells. This process is governed by multiple transient interactions between proteins, cargo and the plasma membrane. How these interactions change to control vesicle growth has been the focus on my research. Our work has contributed to a greater understanding of the structure of the clathrin coat (which provides the scaffold to create a new vesicle), and its interaction with adaptor proteins, which interact variously with clathrin and other components to regulate vesicle formation and recycling.
