Odel is a Research Fellow in Microbiology at the National Biofilms Innovation Centre, with a special interest in tackling biofilm infections, antibiotic resistant ‘superbugs’, and translational research.

Following her degree in Biomedical Science, Odel was a researcher for Helperby Therapeutics, a spin-out company from St. Georges, University of London, focusing on novel antibiotic development and ‘resistance breakers’. Her work involved investigating the use of novel antimicrobial peptides, and combinatory therapies to challenge multi-drug resistant pathogens such as Eschericia coli, Staphlyococcos aureus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Odel completed her PhD in microbiology at the University of Southampton, as part of a Strategic Research Centre in collaboration with Imperial College London, funded by the UK Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Trust. The project focused on the treatment of biofilms formed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an opportunistic pathogen that often infects the lungs of CF patients, posing an immense therapeutic burden and mortality at young age. The study investigated the effect of low dose nitric oxide on biofilms, and carried out pre-clinical drug development of a group of novel anti-biofilm prodrugs to target P. aeruginosa in CF. In particular, specific focus was placed on the use of bacterial strains isolated from cystic fibrosis patients, facilitating the translational research process.

Odel is currently a Research Fellow at the National Biofilms Innovation Centre based at the University of Southampton. Odel is responsible for analysing data from an NIHR funded multi-centre national clinical trial looking at the biofilm formation in the lungs of CF patients. She is also lead post-doctoral researcher on an industrially-led collaboration investigating alternative therapeutic strategies against biofilm infections in wounds. Additionally, she is supervising a PhD project which will work on the next step of the pre-clinical drug development of the group of novel anti-biofilm prodrugs for CF patients.

Research interests

Odel’s research interests lie within clinical microbiology, and in particular with biofilms and infections caused by multi-drug resistant bacteria.

The discovery of antibiotics has been one of the biggest breakthroughs in medical history; unfortunately, the increasing spread of antimicrobial resistance means currently available antibiotics are becoming ineffective and infections are becoming more difficult to treat. In addition to the growing antibiotic resistance crisis, bacteria also resist killing by antimicrobials by living within communities known as biofilms.

Odel’s specific interests involve the formation and disruption of biofilms, drug discovery and development of novel antimicrobials and medical devices to prevent and treat infection, and antimicrobial resistance.

Her expertise is with Gram-negative bacterial species including pathogens such as P. aeruginosa, E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, all listed on the World Health Organisations Priority Pathogens list for R&D. Odel also has expertise in the microbiology of pulmonary disease such as cystic fibrosis, a rare genetic condition resulting in aggressive pulmonary infections and the development of biofilms within the lung.
