Southampton graduate Eagle Yi-Kung Huang is now an Associate Professor with his own laboratory at Taiwan’s National Defense Medical Centre. He studied for a PhD in neuropharmacology at Southampton and is sure the worldwide reputation of Biological Sciences has helped him in his career.

Degrees from an established UK university such as Southampton are always respected in my country. I would advise anyone to study at Southampton.

Eagle took his first degree in Animal Science at the National Taiwan University in Taipei. “I knew I wanted to study abroad and applied to several universities in the UK but I was recommended to come to Southampton,” he explains. “It was my first time overseas and I enjoyed it very much. People were friendly and welcoming and I liked living

reasonably close to London.”

He found studying at postgraduate level with Robert Walker, now an Emeritus Professor at Southampton, and Dr Ram Sharma was an exciting new challenge. “In Taiwan, students are usually guided in their studies; at Southampton I was encouraged to explore my subject myself and make new discoveries. I learned a lot from my supervisors and also through doing my own work in the laboratories,” he says.

Eagle now recommends studying abroad to his talented students in Taiwan. “Degrees from an established UK university such as Southampton are always respected in my country. I would advise anyone to study at Southampton.”
