Head of School accepts prestigious appointment
Biological Sciences links with Imperial College strengthened
Professor Guy Poppy, Head of the School of Biological Sciences, has received a formal invitation to become a Visiting Professor at Imperial College, London. The invitation is in recognition of his links with the College and his particular expertise, which will be utilised in both research and education in the College’s Biology Division, generally considered one of the best in the world.
Guy is an alumnus of Imperial, having studied there for his first degree in Biological Sciences between 1984 and 1987 before going to Oxford to study for his postgraduate degree. His appointment will further enhance the School’s relationship with the College, as he has already collaborated with other well-known academics there on issues such as genetic engineering, food security, and pest management, sharing research grants.
The College and the School will now also be able to share good practice in education at undergraduate, masters and postgraduate level; for example offering guest seminars to third year students and exchanging academic lectures.
Interestingly, his former tutor, Professor Denis Wright, is still working at Imperial and is Dean of Students at the College. With his many years of experience as an auditor, Professor Wright is able to offer expert advice on running biological science degrees and has offered to help share good practice with the School.
Imperial has a number of visiting professors based around the globe, many with specialist areas of interest they want to develop. The group Guy works with are leading the world in pest management and genetic engineering and novel approaches to assessing environmental impact.
Guy says “Biological Sciences at Imperial is one of the best and most important in Britain and is highly placed in world rankings. It’s a great honour to be invited there and I welcome the opportunity to increase my research and educational links with Imperial.”
