Fight against cancer boosted by new grant

Published: 13 December 2011

Professor Chris Proud will continue to explore how cells work with a new £165,000 grant over three years from Cancer Research UK.

He is interested in knowing how cells produce ribosomes which are vital to their ability to make proteins. “Cancer cells grow and multiply very quickly. If we know more about how they do this, we may be able to switch off the mechanism and slow or stop the growth of tumours,” explains Chris.

The grant will finance the continued employment of post-doctoral researcher Valentina Iadevaia on the work at Southampton’s Centre for Biological Sciences.
