Telling the world about science

Published: 18 June 2012

Postdoctoral researchers and PhD students gained an insight into communication and presenting their work at a special workshop organised by Biological Sciences PhD researcher Salome Murinello , and postdoc Ursula Puentener of the Southampton Neuroscience Group (SoNG).

‘Naked Scientist' Ben Valsler explained why communication is vital to the group of 20 early career researchers  from Psychology, Health Sciences and Medicine as well as Biological Sciences. He works with colleagues from Cambridge to broadcast and produce podcasts capturing the fun and excitement of science. Pete Bailie from Vox Coaching offered advice on presentation and interview techniques, working with individuals to answer their questions.

"It is incredibly important to communicate our work to the wider world," says Salome. "We often speak about our work at open days and it is very rewarding to talk to people but it's good to get some expert advice on how to get our message across more effectively."

Feedback from the day was very positive; researchers said they felt more confident about  speaking in public and putting together a podcast to explain their work.
