New opportunities for researchers in Biological Sciences
Postgraduate research students in Biological Sciences are being encouraged to make the most of their time at the University of Southampton by joining a new society.

"PhD and masters students enjoy their work in the lab but it's good to get together with other postgrads to make friends, enjoy social events and find out more about career opportunities," says Nancy Wong, President of the Biological Sciences Postgraduate Society.
In its latest day-long event covering postgraduate careers in science, the Society invited Professor Thorsten Hamann of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology to talk about how to plan an academic career; Sarah Blackford from the Society for Experimental Biology talked about career planning for bioscientists.
"It's important to work hard during your studies but you also need to meet and network with other scientists around the world to establish collaborations for future research," says Thorsten. "I was delighted to be asked to speak to researchers at Southampton and pass on some advice."
First year doctoral student James Edwards who is working on DNA recognition says he found the day was very useful and is enjoying being part of the society: "I studied for my BSc in Biochemistry at Southampton so I know the place well but it's good to welcome students from other parts of the UK and help international students feel at home too."
