Making a start with career planning

Published: 6 December 2013

Biological sciences students got the inside track on careers at a special careers fair on campus.

Two panels of experts spoke about how to get a job in their speciality and answered questions; one group advised biology and zoology students, the other covered biochemistry, biomedical sciences and pharmacology. There were also sessions on teaching, academic career options and how to use social media effectively in the job hunt. A mock assessment centre tested students' interview and reasoning skills and staff from Career Destinations at the University held CV clinics.

"Getting a good job is challenging so we wanted to give our second and third years a head start," explains Sophie Watts from the student society BioSoc who organised the event along with fellow education reps Jemma Knight and Jessica Kent. "We are particularly grateful to our alumni and external speakers for giving everyone an insight into their careers."

Throughout the fair, advisers urged students to start their career planning early, arranging summer placements and internships to make vital contacts with potential employers.
