Latest developments in crystallography have been featured in a special edition of the prestigious academic journal Acta Crystallographica D, edited by Dr Ivo Tews, lecturer in Structural Biology at the University of Southampton. It brings together 16 articles examining existing technologies and future developments in modern structural biology, assembled by leading researchers in the field.

Publication of the special issue followed a study weekend at the University of Nottingham in 2014. “This event was attended by nearly 400 crystallographers from the UK and around the world,” explains Ivo. “The articles in the high impact journal cover cutting edge topics and are likely to be widely cited by researchers in years to come.”

Ivo was the scientific organiser of the study weekend, along with Professor Jon Cooper of University College London, formerly of Southampton. The conference was run under the umbrella of the Collaborative Computational Project Number 4 (CCP4), who have recently being supported by a significant £1.43M grant from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and develop software for crystallographic 3D structure determination in biology and medicine. Ivo now chairs working group two of CCP4.
