Biological Sciences achieves Athena SWAN Silver status
Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton has recently been awarded an Athena SWAN Silver Award.
The Athena SWAN charter recognises and celebrates good practice towards the advancement of equality, and was established in 2005. At this time, the Charter was founded with six principles and focused on the specific issues preventing women academics progressing in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine) careers.
The charter was revised in May 2015 to confront barriers in other disciplines - including those for men, trans people and the impact of race. As a founding signatory, the University of Southampton is committed to advancement of all staff and holds a silver award at organisational level.
Silver Award holders have:
- Demonstrated particular challenges and plan activities for the future
- Taken action in response to previously identified challenges (within or without the Athena SWAN process) and can demonstrate the impact of implemented actions
- Achieved a significant record of activity in promoting gender equality and in addressing challenges
- Athena SWAN charter principles well embedded within the department, and strong leadership in promoting the charter
