National Biofilms Innovation Centre (NBIC) Annual Report 2020: Now Available
The National Biofilms Innovation Centre (NBIC) are delighted to share that their Annual Report 2020 is now available to view and download via their website. This report covers key achievements to date, future plans for training, case studies, international strategy and all of the Proof of Concept (POC) projects that NBIC are funding.
Microbial biofilm research is a feature of many scientific disciplines across the University of Southampton, one of the four lead research institutions of the centre. Research focuses include, antimicrobial tolerance, biofilm microbial ecology and evolution and surface contaimination and decontamination. Our researchers in Biological Sciences are also working in collaboration with chemists in Australia to develop and investigate the use of novel nitric oxide-releasing prodrugs as an alternative therapeutic option for Cystic Fibrosis patients.
The Innovation Knowledge Centre funded by the BBSRC, Innovate UK and the Hartree Centre, is the UK’s hub for accessing biofilm expertise, capability, science and innovation, and connects biofilm specialists across the UK, providing a mechanism for industrial partners to explore their unmet needs with researchers to achieve breakthrough innovation. The centre also supports the development of technologies to prevent, detect, manage and engineer biofilms through translational POC funding.

“NBIC is still a relatively young organisation but I am proud that we have achieved so much since our formation in late 2017. We were formed to support and connect the biofilm community across industry and academia in the UK. In the challenging circumstances we currently face globally, it’s clear that never has the importance of innovation and science been so critical”.
NBIC recently announced the launch of their biofilm awareness campaign, #BiofilmAware, which works to raise awareness of NBIC and its research, and the many societal and economic impacts of biofilms.
